    Cannot load data base for Simply Accounting 2008

    I'm using Simply Accounting Pro v 9 before which was purchased back in 2002 or 2003 and now i have bought a new Simply Accounting for 2 user licences 2008 .

     I want to upgrade my data base to the latest version so that it will be compatible with 2008 version , but everytime i choose 'open company' file function to load my Pro v9 data base to upgrade it to 2008 version , it won't load and it will keep popping back to the 'Open company file' window again and again.

     Information : I'm using a client's PC to open the database and the data base is stored in a server network. Does it have to do with connection manager ? Or is the Pro v 9 data base is not compatible with 2008 software?

     I need the answer urgently , thanks !

    I've updated a version 8.5 file to Simply 2008 without problem.  Your issue is probably due to the location of the data files.  Unless you run the installation of Simply on your network server (you should be able to use the Data-only install because that computer holds the data only and will not need to run Simply as a workstation), you will not have the Connection Manager available to open the files.  Use the same original CD on the server and when you see the Data-only installation option, choose it.

    Make sure you update both the server and workstations to version C also.  It is available from the www.simplyaccounting.com website under support.

    Hi Richard,

    Thanks for your reply.

    I have tried to copy the database from the server network to my workstation PC to upgrade it as well , but the same problem came up. If the problem is per what you mentioned , due to the location of the data files , then when i copy the data to my workstation to upgrade , i should not face this problem.

     I have used Data install mode for the Server as well.

     What do you mean by updating the server and workstation to C version?

     If it's just looping back to the open company window then it's quite possible that your 9.0 is a higher edition then your 2008.  Is your 9.0 a Basic, Pro or Premium?  Is the 2008 the same or higher?

    I don't think version 9.0 is higher than 2008 , because it was purchased back in 2003 , it's Pro version 9.0

    For Simply Accounting is Premium 2008 with 2 user licences. 

     My only assumption is probably Pro v9.0 data base is not compatible with Premium 2008 since the extension name of the file is .SDB , which i think is different from the  extension name of 2008 data base file?

    Nemanja was referring to the fact you never said the 2008 version was the Premium version before.  He thought you might be "upgrading" from Simply 9 Pro to Simply Basic 2008 because that is what you said, however, you cannot downgrade from Pro to Basic 2008, you can only go up to Premium or Enterprise.

    When you copied the files to the client's computer did you just take the sdb file or did you take the sdw file also?  If you ran a backup in Simply from version 9 and restored it to the client's computer, then it did take both files.

    Can you open the sample data on the client's computer?

    Version C is the latest program update for Simply 2008.  Go to Help, About Simply Accounting when you open the sample file and see what version is listed there.  If it is A or B release, then you should update to the latest version either through the SimplyCare update or from the program updates on the main website I inidcated before.

    I have actually created a new company file under Pro v 9.0 (there's sdb file which comes together with sdw file) and try to upgrade it to Premium 2008 as a testing . And still it is not able to do so , still looping back to the 'open company' file window.

     I can open the sample data from client's computer.

    The only other reason I can think of that this occurs is because your version 9 Pro is the US version and 2008 Premium is the Canadian version.  If I recall correctly, the warning message about this is not showing in Simply 2008 versions A and B but it was reactivated in version C.

    The quick way to figure this out is find the sdb file for version 9 in Windows Explorer (My Computer), right-click the file, select the Simply Accounting tab and look for the country.  If it says USA then you have incompatible versions and you will not be able to upgrade to the Canadian version of 2008.

    I have tried to do as per what is instructed (right click on the sdb file) but there's no Simply Accounting tab which will show what version is the data base. I have tried even on the 'properties' side , but there's nothing stated there the country of the data file.

     If it is really a US version , is there anyway that the Simply Accounting technical support team can help in upgrading the data to 2008 version?
