Keep your connection alive with Simply Accounting 2008

We have created a simple Windows Services that maintains Simply Accounting 2008 database running, even when no Simply Accounting clients are running.

After getting some request from users of this forum, we have decided to give it away to the community. It is offered free of charge, and as such without any garantee of any kind.

You can download it from here: www.logicimtech.com/simplykeepalive.aspx

Post your questions or comments on this thread and I will follow up on them here.

Thanks for your reply. I can start the service now. I have no idea why I got the error last time. Anyway, the service is running and works great.

One thing I notice is that everytime I restart or shutdown my computer, the service doesn't restart automatically even though the Startup Type is Automatic.

Does anyone else have this problem like me?

Re: Keep your connection alive with Simply Accounting 2008

I'm wondering if it's starting and stopping or if it's really not starting at all. Check the event log to see if there is a start event and a stop event when rebooting.

It the Simply database file on the same computer?

Yes, the SA database file and Connection Manager are on the same computer. I checked the event log, there're no start or stop event when rebooting the computer. I can start and stop the service manually in the Services window.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I figured out what the problem was. When the computer rebooted, the service tried to start before the Connection Manager, that's why it failed. So, I change the startup order of these 2 services to make sure that it starts after the Connection Manager. Now it's working perfectly.

Thanks again for all your help on this matter.

I am new to SA and new to mysql.  But I have DB and programming experience and I have just discovered mysql Server (WAMP or XAMPP).  This free package allows one to "really" manage a mysql DB.  Wouldn't it be nice if I could use this to massage some SA data.  But I can't connect using the mysql/phpMyAdmin utilities.  Can someone relate to this and shed some light?

    Thanks

Re: Keep your connection alive with Simply Accounting 2008

First, be careful when playing with Simply Accounting data. Make sure you understand the database before adding or updating anything in it.

To connect to the MySQL server, you first need it to be running. This is the case only if Simply Accounting is running or another third party is running and connected to the database. The Simply Accounting Connection Manager service start the MySQL when it is needed and stops it when all connections are released.

Then, the port number to access the database is not the usual MySQL port number. By default, the first database open will be assigned 13540. Subsequent database will follow (13541, 13542, ...). The database name is 'simply' and you must use a user with third party access right to open it (see Set up user in Simply).

    That pretty much covers it.
