SA 2008 Premium, Vista Home Premium, Microsoft Office Documents Problem

Hi I've got SA 2008 Premium installed and for the most part, running ok on Vista. Where I'm having problems is using any of the supplied Microsoft Office Documents like Payroll Summary.xls etc. (I'm using MS Office 2007 Pro). They all go through the usual, asking me for the database, and the login information and then I get an error message telling me (paraphrasing because I'm going from memory at home here) that I "may not have sufficient access rights to open the database or my password may be incorrect"

I know the same scenario will work ok under XP pro so I'm thinking it has something to do with Vista but I'm stumped.

I've checked the Vista firewall settings and made sure they're all the same as those suggested somewhere else on this site so that seems to be ok. I've stepped through the code in the Office Document to see where it's failing and the actual error message is something along the lines of "Operation is not allowed when the object is closed", the one I get in the msgbox is just coded into the document. I can get the actual mysql error number if that's any help but I suspect it won't be.

While it may seem a minor problem I actually modify and use these office documents quite a bit and dread having to go back to XP just to get them to work, not because I prefer Vista, but because of the amount of work involved in changing back, so if anyone has any suggestions on what to try or even just have questions for me because my explanation of the problem wasn't clear, I would appreciate it. thanks glenn

Well, I solved this and the problem, of course, was user dumbness

I doubt anyone else will do this to themselves but just in case, here's what happened. I usually use about 8 character passwords. When I installed simply accounting I used an eight character password which Simply Accounting truncated it silently (because I don't have speakers on this machine) to its maximum seven characters.

When I tried to use the Office Documents through ODBC I of course used my eight character password which wasn't truncated because mysql has no such restriction I guess. My eight character password was obviously not the correct seven character password that simply accounting stored and the connection failed.

I hate it when I do that.

I have actually had someone contact me who thought it was interesting that the program would let you know when the password was entered correctly using a beep. They thought it was a security problem. In fact it was just the program telling the user that the password was too long. I've seen this happen a lot with users using Crystal. External programs have no idea about the limitations of the passwords and will allow anything to be entered.

    Hi there

I'm having the exact problem, only difference is that I don't use a password. The only user set up is sysadmin and my "Add User" button is greyed out.  When I try to use the Microsoft Documents reports I enter "sysadmin" as username, (as this is the only user currently set up), and leave password blank, I get the same error message you were getting. "You may not have sufficient rights to access Simply Accounting company data from other products, or your user id or password may not be correct.  Please contact your system administrator for assistance."

I recently installed SA 2008 Premium on a new computer running Vista Home Premium.

make sure you set your "sysadmin" username for "write/access" to third party program. u can find this option under setup-setting-setup users-modify user "sysadmin".

     hope it helps......:)

The navigation is slightly off.  It should be Setup>Setup Users>OK>Modify User
